Eddie Aikau

Hello. My name is Edward Ryan Makuahanai Aikau. I was born in Kahului, Maui on may 4th, 1946. I have 6 brothers and sisters. My dad, Solomon Aikau, who we c all in alled pops, taught us how to surf in the old Kahului Harbor. We didnt have that many things, so we relied on family for entertainment. In 1959, my father and mother, Henrietta Aikau, moved all of us to Oahu so we could have better opportunities. Pops got a got a job as a cemetery worker, so we lived in a category at the graveyard and our family had to take care of the land. My family loved the butt on and we would be at that place 24/7 if we could have. But forth we could go we had to beguile all of our chores arise dressede. Some condemnations, I would jump my chores at 3 in the morning, and skip tame to go to the margin and ride waves. Since my family didnt have much money, my brother Clyde and I made our own surfboards made start of ocean ply. We would ever so ride waves at Waikiki Wall. Because I was skipping school so much, my pops told me If you dont go to school, you have to get a job, and thats just how it is. So when I was 16 I dropped emerge of school and got a job at the Dole Cannery. I used that money to help out my family, and buy me a good board. My brothers and I surfed all the time and we quickly conquered self-aggrandizing waves. John Kelly and Sammy Lee taught me how to surf larger waves, and how to conquer fear. later that year I went to Waimea Bay and was strike by the big waves. That was the sidereal day I caught my beginning(a) wave!! My brother Clyde was in shock! At Waimea, there were many crazy sight who loved to take risks no matter what the dangers were. One day this guy died when he got pulled into the current, so I decided to go to the Honolulu city and county and asked to be the North Shore action guard. I had to cover all the beaches between Sunset and Haleiwa, and I saved every bread and butter I could; if I had to guess, hundreds of l arge number in 3 years.
